Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
How Can chest Congestion Along With Breathlessness Be Treated?
Appears to be strong cold, 5 days now. Caught during visit to Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Early on, felt feverish, but not obviously overheated. Stiff shoulder and neck muscles, since having receded. Head congestion, runny nose, breathing difficulties through nose. Chest congestion, nominal phlem during coughing. One eye is bloodshot and has itchy feeling. Both eyes watery. Age 68, in good health overall. Good blood pressure at all previous measurings.
Chest congestion, breathlessness after a common cold is mostly due to post infectious bronchitis.
Bronchitis (inflammation of airways) is common after viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI).
So better to consult pulmonologist and get done a clinical examination of the respiratory system and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test). PFT will not only diagnose bronchitis but it will also tell you about the severity of the disease and treatment is based on severity only.
You will mostly improve with inhaled bronchodilators (Formoterol or Salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (Budesonide or Fluticasone).
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar,
Pulmonologist
